A southern belle derived from the French word belle meaning beautiful is an archetype for a young woman of the American Old South's upper class. She is admired for her beauty and charm. Some people said that the life of a certain belle is easy but the truth is it is not. Being a belle is a responsibility.
During the period, Kentuckian Sallie Ward of Louisville was the most noted belle in the South and her portrait which hangs in the Speed Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, is often called The Southern Belle.
Here’s how to play as a Belle:
-You have to live an extravagant lifestyle. Southern belles are considered upper class and are living with abundant money.
-Familiarize the drinks used by the South. If you don't drink alcohol, lemonade is acceptable.
-Watch your words. You have to bear in mind that you are going to a cotillion. Respected people are there, therefore you have to act like a princess and make sure that incorporate words are prohibited.
-Always bring with you a white handkerchief for you to catch gentlemen attention.
-Magnolia trees must be in your garden. If you are going to read books in your garden then, feel free as if the trees are your audience.
-If things get difficult like for instance you have to make yourself more appealing to the public then you are requested to do exercises, expect those vapors from you.
-Read books about fashion, you need not to limit yourself from improving. If you read a book that caught your attention on how to walk like a princess, why not follow the movements also?
-Live like a real Southern Belle. There is nothing wrong if you want to be like them. But you have to consider and prepare yourself because being a Belle is not as simple as buying clothes in the department store. You have to spend lots of money just for you to look like a Belle. You have to watch every movement you are going to do, watch every word that comes out from your mouth.
